Panel – From Erosion to Restoration: Rethinking the Judiciary’s Democratic Role
On February 27, we had the pleasure of hosting Gábor Halmai (Eötvös Loránd University) and Ágnes Kovács (Eötvös Loránd University), and Max Steuer (Comenius University in Bratislava & Universität Münster) at HU-Berlin for the panel at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
At a time when judicial institutions are under growing pressure in many parts of the world, the discussion could not have been more timely. The discussion was based on their recently published special issue, Resilience and Resistance of Constitutional Courts against Autocratization, which examines the resilience of nine constitutional courts and the ways in which they have resisted processes of autocratization. Their comparative insights provided a nuanced and empirically grounded perspective on the conditions under which courts can withstand political pressure.
The panel was moderated by Ertuğ Tombuş (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin).
The event was organized within our JuDem – Judiciary and Democracy Project and generously supported by the Humboldt Stiftung.
