“Dying to Divorce” - Documentary Screening & Discussion
On 14 June 2026, the JuDem project hosted a screening of Dying to Divorce at aquarium (Kreuzberg), followed by a panel discussion with İpek Bozkurt, Zarah Baur, and Dr. Anke Clodius, moderated by Gülçin Balamir Coşkun. The event explored gender-based violence, feminist activism, and challenges to democracy and the rule of law in Turkey.

LSI Lecture Series: Did The Future Die of Old Age?
On 15 May 2026, JUDEM organized a workshop at Bilkent University bringing together feminist lawyers, bar association representatives, members of solidarity centers, and researchers. Participants discussed challenges related to violence against women, institutional barriers within the legal system, and strategies of feminist solidarity. The workshop concluded with a collective reflection on feminist visions for a more just, accessible, and gender-sensitive future of justice.

Ertuğ Tombuş joined Pınar Kemerli and Archie Magno for a conversation on “The Concept of Populism at the Time of Crisis” at Bard College. Organized by the Bard Center for Civic Engagement, the event featured a lecture by Tombuş and a broader discussion on populism in times of crisis.

On February 27, we had the pleasure of hosting Gábor Halmai (Eötvös Loránd University) and Ágnes Kovács (Eötvös Loránd University), and Max Steuer (Comenius University in Bratislava & Universität Münster) at HU-Berlin for the panel at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

CCRD researchers participated in the ICON•S 2026 Conference in Dublin. As part of the VolkswagenStiftung-funded JuDem project, they organized a panel on safeguarding judicial autonomy, while Heleen Matton presented her paper on gender governance and democratic erosion.
The opening event of the JuDem project has successfully taken place. The event featured Oona Hathaway as the keynote speaker, who delivered a insightful talk on contemporary challanges facing the judiciary and democratic governance, as well as the future pathways for strengthening democratic institutions.
Cities and the Rule of Law
On 15 June 2026, the JuDem team gathered in Berlin for its annual in-person meeting. Participants reflected on recent developments across the project's work packages, discussed democratic innovation and the judiciary, and planned upcoming research, events, and dissemination activities for the year ahead.
Dr. Gülcin Balamir Coskun participated in the “Cities and the Rule of Law” event at the European Parliament.

Conversations with Judges: Master Class & Conversation with Ivana Jelić

As part of the LSI Berlin Lecture Series at the Law and Society Institute Berlin, Stephen Holmes delivered a lecture titled “Did the Future Die of Old Age?” The talk examined how contemporary crises are eroding belief in the future and explored the implications of this shift for democratic politics and societal expectations.
Feminist lawyers gathered in Istanbul to exchange experiences on gender-based violence cases and to discuss structural challenges within the justice system. The workshop also explored collaborative strategies for strengthening feminist legal advocacy and access to justice.
Our team member Leonie Teresa Bohle, together with Antika Gandhi, served as moderator at an event in the “Conversations with Judges” series.
